RESEARCH THRUST - 3

  • This research thrust is aimed at developing a prototype model for species distribution predictions of market squid. The prototype will extend the spatial decision-making capabilities for the Pacific Fishery Management Council’s management strategy evaluation tool. The current experimental model offers probabilistic predictions of the occurrence of market quid based on physical ocean variables such as substrate type, ocean bottom temperature, and bottom oxygen. The available data output for the model is a daily prediction on a 0.1 degree spatial resolution. Currently the model is able to produce experimental predictions for probabilities of species presence, but could be adapted to provide predictions of biomass and catch. In our Phase II project, we plan to utilize deliverables—output data—from the HiCATCCHp simulations to force the prototype market squid model. These prediction simulations will then be integrated into the Management Evaluation system to evaluate the utility of shorter-term forecasting information for fisheries management decisions.
